Peel Health Campus - Parliamentary InquiryThe ongoing Parliamentary Inquiry into the Peel Health Campus, has found that CEO John Fogarty had paid himself $10m as a ‘consultant’. “This is just another sign that privatising public hospitals costs tax payers more,” said United Voice Assistant Secretary Carolyn Smith. "This is appalling. The State Government has lost control of the WA health system, allowing Peel Health Campus CEO John Fogerty to pay himself $10m. This is what happens when public hospitals are privatised, there is no accountability." said Ms Smith. "10 million dollars would pay for 170 more nurses at Peel Health Campus. The recent inquiry has also heard that patients at Peel Health Campus have suffered because of cost cutting on staffing levels. “We have heard some very worrying stories about patients waiting for hours for food and one patient being left in a soiled bed for hours. Staff raised their concerns about patient load yet management did nothing. “Peel Health Campus has a lower nurse to patient ratio compared to other hospitals. Quality care is compromised because profits come first. That’s privatisation, that’s the nature of the beast. That’s why Public hospitals should be In Public Hands.” Ms Smith said the staff at Peel Health Campus also have the lowest wages for the sector across both the public and private hospital system in WA. The Barnett Government has completely overlooked the mismanagement of the privatised Peel Health Campus because it was the Liberal government who privatised it in the 1990s. Health Solutions WA have also donated $125,000 to the Liberal Party. “Coincidently, Health Solutions contract to manage Peel is up for renewal shortly. Colin Barnett has the opportunity to return this hospital to public hands.” |

The State Government is privatising essential services in our hospitals. In Public Hands is committed to fighting the State Government’s privatisation agenda because we know that privatisation will lead to lower standards and poorer quality of care in our hospitals. We also know that it will result in fewer jobs, lower pay and increased workloads for hospital workers.
Recent experiences in Australia and around the world have shown that the privatising of government services has eroded the quality of care and lowered standards in hospitals. The State Government argues that privatisation saves money, but experience shows that privatised health services often cost taxpayers more money.
The fight against privatisation is a fight we cannot afford to lose. Please join our campaign to keep our hospitals In Public Hands.
